What's the first thing(s) you read in the morning? Two different translations can feel like two entirely different books. Over the past few weeks, there's been an ongoing discussion of the new Pevear and Volokhonsky translation of War and Peace in the NY Times Reading Room. It would seem that the only translation of War and Peace that an even mildly informed reader in 2013 would choose would be that by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky. Currently: War and Peace, the new Pevear/Volokhonsky translation. I highly recommend the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation. Pevear and Volokhonsky include all the French, with pages of footnotes. War and Peace published by Penguin Classics is translated by Anthony Briggs. This translation is ideal because it sticks as closely to the text as possible. And thus, she kindly answered our probing, exploitative questions. War-and-peace-maude Although Brigg's translation is excellent, I am most familiar with the Maude translation.
